If you want new interior decorating ideas then visit Dubai interiors show 2011 at the Dubai World Trade Centre from October 22 to 25.

The 21st edition of Index, Mena’s top interiors and design exhibition, will feature more than 800 exhibitors representing top international brands from 49 countries at its upcoming event in Dubai.

Taking place across 20,000 sq m at the Dubai World Trade Centre, Index 2011 will introduce six product-specific shows including furnishings, inretail, kitchen & bathroom, lighting, outdoor living and textiles.

Organised by dmg :: events, the exhibition will also showcase 20 national pavilions, providing product specification by country.
“The introduction of the product-specific shows solidifies Index’s position as the ‘must attend’ design show for industry professionals from the Mena region,” said Paula Al Chami, event director for Index.

“Based on insights and feedback we received from the market and from our visitors, 68 per cent of the people wanted the show to be product-specific while the remainder wanted to see products split by the manufacturing nation, so we now offer both.”

“We believe this structure will allow exhibitors to effectively present their products and services to the right audience and also make it easier for visitors to navigate throughout our very large exhibition,” she added.

The new product-specific shows at Index will showcase a line-up of top international manufacturers and brands, bringing their latest products, trends and design innovation to this region.

“Visitors to the show can also look forward to the highest number of additional show features the show has ever had,” Al Chami said.

“We are introducing interactive features alongside each of the new product-specific show sectors, generic features, conferences, competitions and panel discussions and CES seminars. With nearly 90 per cent of our visitors looking to Index for networking and inspiration, there will be something in it for everybody,” she added.

Index 2011 will feature a host of events including a kitchen and bathroom show, lighting, an exclusive fashion show, InRetail Summit 2011 – a dedicated conference grouping retail firms, an art gallery, design seminars, a student design challenge event, a Majlis design competition as well as an architecture award and an interior design congress organised by the Association of Professional Interior Designers (Apid).

This is the Ramadan (fasting) period in Dubai (01 – 31 August 2011). The fasting hours starts around 8:00am and ends around 4:30pm every day. The time slightly varies depending on the day.

The official 2011 Ramadan calendar is available here.

Important information for travelers and expats

Irrespective of you are a Muslim, non Muslim, expat or a traveler it is illegal to eat, drink or smoke in public during fasting hours (not even in your car). You also must maintain a conservative dress code during these hours. Live music is banned and you should avoid noisy entertainment at home or office.

This is the law of Dubai and UAE. There are severe punishments for those who are breaking the law.

Majority of restaurants will be closed during fasting hours. However, major shopping malls in Dubai might have takeaway facilities from the restaurants at their food court. Dine-in facilities will be very rare.

Supermarkets, service stations and similar outlets in the Dubai and UAE are open during the day during Ramadan, and will sell food and drink (but not for consumption on the premises, in your car, or in public).

Fast-food outlets such as KFC, McDonalds operates takeaway counters.

If you are planning a holiday in Dubai then my advice is try to avoid Ramadan period.

The health care system in Dubai is considered by the international community to be on a par with those of developed nations insofar as its quality is concerned. A number of factors or reasons give credence to this recognition.

For one, hospitals and clinics in Dubai – numbering about twenty – are fully equipped with the latest in medical technology and are highly accessible, being situated in strategic locations. The 2009 census places the population of Dubai at around 1,241,000. This translates to 1:62,050 hospital/clinic-patient ratio.

The Department of Health and Medical Services (DOHMS) of Dubai runs the Emirate’s public health care. Dubai residents, as well as those of the neighboring emirates, enjoy practically costless medical services. But it must be mentioned here that there is no mandatory employer or state contribution insurance schemes that are in place in Dubai.

That’s right. All employers are not obligated to provide health care insurance to its workers. The DOHMS may issue a health card to a foreign worker who applies for one. The health card qualifies a foreign patient for acceptance by a public hospital, but only in an emergency case. Foreign workers may also obtain their own health insurance, and they will need to make their own arrangements for this.

Many private health care providers are also on hand to lend support to Dubai’s health care programs. Most of the foreign health care professionals working in Dubai are from the USA, Europe, and India. Their credentials are carefully scrutinized by the government before they are allowed to practice their profession in Dubai.

Part of the responsibilities of a health care professional in Dubai is the rendering of after-clinic private medical calls. This is one of the good practices that make the health care system in Dubai truly effective. Every person in Dubai, regardless of nationality and residency, is given the full medical attention he or she needs. Of course, such after-clinic private medical services involve higher fees than those rendered during regular clinic hours.

The focus of the health care system of Dubai is on improving its people’s overall well-being. Everyone is guaranteed with the appropriate care specific to his or her case. Dubai’s health care system guarantees the provision of a wide range of medical services, including these four popular ones:

1. Educating its people on the importance of having good health and proper nutrition;

2. Ensuring medical fitness for everyone;

3. Providing family and marriage counseling and other similar community services;

4. Administering vaccinations and immunizations.

Health care professionals in Dubai also provide psychiatric treatments, rehabilitation, and yoga therapy.

Dubai has undertaken what is considered its most extensive medical project thus far, with the creation of the Dubai Healthcare City (DHCC). This project is the world’s first health care free zone, and consists of virtually the big players in the medical community.

The DHCC houses the Dubai Harvard Foundation for Medical Research (DHFMR), the University of Teaching Hospital (UH), and the Boston University Institute for Dental Research and Education Dubai (BUIDRE), among others.

Hot news from Khaleej Times.

In one of the biggest fraud cases worth Dh1.8 billion, the Dubai Court of First Instance jailed six expatriates, including two former ex-Dubai Islamic Bank employees to 10 years each.

Presiding Judge Fahmi Mounir Fahmi on Wednesday, also fined the guilty Dh1.8 billion and ordered them to repay the amount jointly to Dubai Islamic Bank (DIB). The judge also fined three of the defendants Dh7.2 million and ordered them to jointly repay the amount to the bank.

The Dubai Public Prosecution had charged the seven suspects — three Britons, two Pakistanis, a Turk and an American — with embezzling public funds, deliberately helping others to embezzle public funds, inflicting intentional loss to the government and its interests, unlawful profiting and forging official documents and using them.

The public prosecution accused the two Pakistani executives (former bank employees), the finance manager of the bank and his deputy of aiding and abetting the embezzlement of public funds, inflicting intentional loss to the government and its interests, and the forging of official documents.

The two bank employees facilitated the forging of documents and increased the credit limit for two businessmen against taking money. In return, the manager received a bribe of $750,000 while the deputy received $950,000. The American is at large after

embezzling $2 million and establishing a company. He also forged invoices, documents of sales and purchase transactions. The British businessman along with the Turkish national and two other British nationals embezzled Dh1,841,000 from the bank using forged documents facilitated by the bank employees.

Meanwhile, the seventh suspect, a British businessman, has been acquitted. All the six including two suspects who are at large will be deported after serving the jail term. All six suspects can appeal the court ruling within 15 days.

The fraud caused a loss of $501 million (around Dh1.8 billion) worth of public funds belonging to DIB. The case was referred by the Dubai Public Prosecution to the court on March 30, 2009.

Last August, the court returned the case to the Dubai Public Prosecution to investigate the fraud and review the charges.

The beautiful city of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) officially observes ten holidays every year. Of these ten official Dubai holidays, five are marked as important dates on the Islamic calendar. These are the Islamic New Year, Eid Milad an Nabi, Lailat al Miraj, Eid Al Fitr, and Eid Al Adha.

The other three official Dubai holidays are exclusive to Dubai or the UAE (The Dubai Shopping Festival, His Highness Sheikh Zayed’s Ascension Day, and the National Day), while the last two are observances adopted from Western tradition (New Year’s Day and Christmas).

Let’s understand the significance of each of these holidays:

1. New Year’s Day (January 1):

This is one of two holidays adopted from the West that is officially observed in Dubai. Hence, Dubai observes the occasion also at the start of the new Gregorian year, which is January 1.

2. Islamic New Year (approx. February-March):

This occasion is observed on the first day of Muharram, the first month in the Islamic calendar. It is the occasion when many Muslims remember the significance of the Hijra, or the migration, when the prophet Muhammad and his followers made it to the city now known as Medina in 622 (CE).

3. The Dubai Shopping Festival (First Quarter of the Gregorian Year):

An annual retail event that is also popularly referred to by its initials DSF, the Dubai Shopping Festival was first held on February 15, 1996, with the aim of revitalizing the city’s retail trade. The event was later promoted as a tourist attraction. Some three million people visit Dubai each year primarily because of this event.

4. “Mawlid (Eid Milad an Nabi)” or the Prophet’s Birthday (approx. April-May):

This day marks the observance of the birthday of the prophet Muhammad, which takes place on the twelfth day of Rabi II, the fourth month in the Islamic calendar.

5. “Lailat al Miraj” or the Ascension of the Prophet (approx. September):

This is one of the most important events in the Islamic calendar. Around the year 621 (CE), the prophet Muhammad embarked on what is known as the “Night Journey”, when he was spiritually transported to heaven. The event is observed on the twenty-seventh day of Rajab, the seventh month in the Islamic calendar.

6. H.H. Sheikh Zayed’s Ascension Day (August 6):

Through the observance of this event, Dubai remembers the great achievements of President His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, whose vision has placed the UAE among the top countries in the world, especially in terms of security and financial stability. It was on August 6, 1966 when Sheikh Zayed ascended to power and ruled the UAE until his death on November 2, 2004.

7. “Eid Al Fitr” (approx. November):

This holiday marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting. Eid is Arabic for “festivity”, while Fitr means “to break fast”. Hence, the holiday serves as a symbol of the breaking of the fasting period. The occasion is observed after the end of the Islamic month of Ramadan, on the first day of Shawaal (the tenth month in the Islamic calendar).

8. National Day (December 2):

This is the most significant occasion in the history of Dubai. It was on December 2, 1971 when Dubai gained independence from British colonial rule. Every year on this same day since then, the National Day of Dubai is held. The occasion is a celebration of honor, pride and patriotism.

9. “Eid Al Adha” or the Festival of Sacrifice (approx. January-February):

Also referred to as the “Greater Eid”, this is a holiday celebrated by Muslims throughout the world, as a way of commemorating Abraham’s (Ibrahim’s) act of obedience to God with his show of willingness to sacrifice his only son. Besides this, the occasion likewise provides the people of Dubai the opportunity of simply spending time with their families and enjoying the fact that they all have food to eat and homes for shelter.

10. Christmas (December 25):

Yes, Christmas is celebrated in this predominantly Muslim state. Visitors to Dubai during this period find Christmas trees and decorations in stores. Children also have lots of fun having their pictures taken with a man dressed as Santa Claus in some of the malls.

Understanding the different Dubai holidays and knowing when each of these takes place will help you plan or organize a perfect trip to this marvelous city in the UAE.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Prime Minister and Vice President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and ruler of Dubai, envisioned a grand project that will make Dubai a highly-preferred healthcare center in the world. And so the Dubai Healthcare City came into being.

The Dubai Healthcare City (DHCC) is an integration of the best in clinical services, research, and medical education. Basically, two very important zones make up the DHCC – the Medical Community and the Wellness Community. The former is already operational, while the latter is still in the planning stages.

The Medical Community:

This zone, which has an area of 380,902.5 square meters (4.1 million square feet), has seen rapid growth since its establishment. The 80 or so clinics located here are staffed by more than a thousand healthcare professionals, all of whom are licensed by the Centre for Healthcare Planning of the DHCC. This licensing prerequisite ensures that all the services being provided at DHCC satisfy the standards set by the different international accreditation bodies (example, the Joint Commission International).

The Medical Community houses the following medical entities:

• Harvard Medical School Dubai Centre (HMSDC) Institute for Postgraduate Education and Medical Research;

• University Teaching Hospital (UH);

• Dubai Harvard Foundation for Medical Research (DHFMR);

• Boston University Institute for Dental Research and Education Dubai (BUIDRE).

• Al Maktoum Harvard Medical Library.

The Wellness Community:

This zone, which has an area more than four times that of the Medical Community’s (1.77 million square meters or 19 million square feet), is intended to serve as the region’s center for integrative and preventive medicine. As the name it carries suggests, this zone also aims to be the region’s primary center for the advancement of wellness.

The Wellness Community will have the following features:

• A health and long-term care facility;

• Outpatient clinics;

• A facility for sports medicine;

• A cosmetic services center;

• A center for the promotion of active lifestyle;

• A five-star hotel and spa resorts;

• A residential district with food and retail outlets.

As a whole, the DHCC offers a complete range of medical and other complementary services, which include those in the following 19 fields:

1. Cardiology

2. Immunology

3. Chiropractic

4. Family medicine

5. Anesthesia

6. Dentistry

7. Pediatrics

8. Obstetrics

9. Urology

10. Dermatology

11. Orthopedic

12. Neurology

13. Internal medicine

14. Physical therapy

15. Radiology

16. Plastic surgery

17. Endocrinology

18. Gastroenterology

19. General surgery

Consider these big names that are getting on board the DHCC: Johnson and Johnson, Novartis, the Mayo Clinic, Astra Zeneca, the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery Hospital, and the German Heart Center, among others.

The entire Dubai Healthcare City is expected to be fully operational in 2011 at the latest. It is strategically located at the heart of Dubai City, in the historic district of Bur Dubai. It is near the Dubai Creek and is about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) away from the Dubai International Airport. The best way to reach DHCC from Abu Dhabi is via the E 11 highway.

Are you in Dubai? Then you can print your digital photos online. The process is very simple.

Visit www.emiratesavenue.com

Click the “Photo Printing” icon at the top.

Upload your digital photos

The Emirates Avenue will deliver your printed copies within 24 hours. Delivery is free.

This online digital photo printing facility will save you heaps of time.

Wait! That’s not all

Sign-up for the newsletter in the Emirates Avenue website and receive 25Dhs voucher. You can use this as part of your digital photo printing payment.

Why you must print digital photos?

Some of you may think that it is better to keep digital photos in a storage device such as CD, DVD, USB stick etc. But we do not recommend that. The simple reason is it is very easy to loose all your important photos due to the storage media corruption. This could be a physical damage or a file corruption.

The other reason to print digital photos is that you can see them when ever you need it. Otherwise you have to fire-up your Computer and view photos.

Other options for digital photo printing in Dubai

There are many shops in Dubai that can take digital photo printing. If you have time to walk or drive to one of the shops then this may be an option for you. But for me the best option is EmiratesAvenue online printing.

Melbourne’s Matt Joyce and Sydney’s Marcus Lee spent nine months in a Dubai jail and finally have been granted bail in the lead-up to their fraud trial, expected to begin next month.

They had been working for Dubai real estate developer Nakheel on the waterfront development when they were arrested. Joyce had been managing director and Lee commercial manager of the development.

The following details were published by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).

Joyce’s solicitor, Martin Amad, says it is the first time an independent judicial officer has looked over the defence material submitted on his client’s behalf.

“[There are] allegations of deception, as part of his employment with Nakheel, and these allegations are vehemently denied by Matt,” he said.

“Now that he’s on bail, he looks forward to joining his wife and three children and obviously spending some quality time with them and also preparing his defence. He’s very, very confident that ultimately he’ll be found innocent of these allegations.”

The men were arrested nine months ago and were charged with fraud in July.

Mr Amad says the charges would not stand up in Australia.

“This is a completely innocent transaction,” he said.

“There’s been a total misunderstanding on behalf of the Dubai prosecution authorities. We believe the granting of bail is indicative of that. It may well be a case of a severe global financial crisis and the effect of that crisis in Dubai. It may be a number of other factors.”

The property market in Dubai suffered during the financial crisis and Mr Amad says his client’s situation is not unique.

“There have been a number of cases of expats residing and working in Dubai who have run foul of the law over there in similar circumstances and in circumstances where they likewise have been found totally innocent of any allegations,” he said.

No one knows what the truth is. I am sure all expats in Dubai will be closely watching the trial and how it will be conducted.
